Campsite: Mena Caravan & Camping Park
8/28/2009 8:56:38 AM
Campsite: Mena Caravan & Camping Park
Location: Lanivet, Bodmin, Cornwall PL30 5HW

Feedback:

Mena Caravan & Camping Park – Bodmin, Cornwall
Mena Caravan & Camping Park is a lovely, very friendly, spacious and secluded camp site situated on a hill just to the South West of Bodmin, Cornwall. I was quite lazy when choosing this camp site – I basically did a Google search of camp sites near Bodmin and picked one of the top results – and I was not disappointed!

Best points: friendly, spacious, great for dogs & local meat
Bad points: none (honest, I really can’t think of any!)

To book, I completed their online booking form. Within a matter of hours I had an email back confirming they had space. Amazingly the email even suggested booking a single larger pitch, rather than two smaller pitches to save money – the sceptic in me thought this was so they could squeeze as many people on as possible, but on arrival there were plenty of spaces, so they were being genuinely helpful!
Both times I rang Mena – firstly to confirm the booking and pay the deposit, and secondly to double check the pitch size (after buying a new tent) – the person on the other end of the phone was very friendly and helpful. This friendliness continued throughout our stay – the staff/owners were welcoming and always happy to chat whenever we popped into the shop.
In total the cost was £40 for two people, two tents and a dog (in high season).
The Site
The dog guarding my tent at Mena
The site is situated about 5 minutes from the A30, down a few narrow (but very quiet) lanes. However the position of the site means that you can’t hear any noise from the A30. The site has 15 acres of open space, with 25 pitches (some with electric hook up). The site is broadly made up of three areas – you have a landscaped and well maintained main camping / caravan area, which is predominately flat, on top of a hill with some nice views (including over to Helman Torr, a Neolithic hill fort site). There is then a larger field slopping down hill – paths have been mowed around and through the field for dog walkers, and it makes for an excellent early morning / late evening stroll. At the bottom of the hill is a fishing pond and wooded area – dogs are allowed to swim in the pond provided no one is fishing (fishing ticket costs £3 per day per rod). The pitches are a decent size and well spaced – there is a small play area in the middle of the site (with goal posts, basketball hoop etc.), with most of pitches around the edge.

Facilities
Breakfast - eggs from the site's hens and local bacon & sausages
There are two toilet and shower blocks – both of which were clean and tidy throughout most of our stay. There was a bit of a queue for showers in the morning, but nothing too irksome, and they were hot, fairly powerful and free! One of the blocks also has laundry facilities (coin operated) and a freezer that is free to use for freezing ice blocks.
There is a small shop on site selling all the essentials – best of all the shop also sold local burgers, bacon and sausages. The sausages were extremely flavoursome and the bacon was the thickest I think I have ever seen. They also sell eggs from rescued battery hens – all the proceeds from the eggs goes on feed and on rescuing more!
Although we didn’t investigate, the site also has a large games barn with pool table and table tennis.
One other thing of note (for us geeks anyway) is that the site, being on a hill, receives excellent T-mobile 3.5g Mobile Broadband signal.
Local Area
Cheesewring - Bodmin Moor
The site is nice and close to Bodmin and Bodmin Moor. As the site is right next to the A30, in the centre of Cornwall, you have easy access to most main tourist destinations – the Eden Project is only 4 miles away, the National Trust’s Lanhydrock House & Gardens are 3 miles away, and the nearest Beach is 8 miles away.

Conclusion
Mena Caravan & Camping Park is a gem of a campsite and is highly recommended for anyone wanting to visit Cornwall.

Campsite name: Scratby Hall
Overall rating: 8/10
Campsite location: Scratby, Nr Caister Norfolk.
Campsite contact details: http://scratbyhall.co.uk/
Washing facilities:
Clean, with showers that were hot but not powerful. Had a key to get in which made it difficult for our little ones to go to the toilet on their own.
Suited to: Families
WiFi access: No
Nearby attractions & views: Less than 2 miles to the beach, 4 miles to Caister, 10 miles to Great Yarmouth.
Cost per pitch£15-£20 (for Bank Holiday weekend) (Ed: Check the website for up to date costs)
General feedback:  Great site, good play area for the kids, there's a swimming pool but it only opens July & August and we went in May. Very quiet, tucked away and surrounded by trees. One field with hook-ups, one field without. Was very full the Bank Holiday we went but never felt crowded or over-run.

General feedback: We had mixed feelings about this site. On the one hand, the location is fantastic with stunning scenery and well maintained pitches. However, we found the reception a little 'cold', we were given no information about where the site's facilities were and, despite the site being largely empty, we were asked to pay a surcharge as there were only two of us in our tent. The coin operated showers and charges for the car park all added to the feeling that this was a site looking for every opportunity to take our money - we would rather they had just charged a little extra up front as this felt like booking a budget airline flight and then paying over the odds for your luggage and taxes.
However, as long as you go prepared to pay for every single element of your stay, this is not a badly maintained site with good transport links.

Your thoughts on this site: Jules from Derbshire comments: "Just read your review for Fieldhead. Maybe we're lucky, but we've never had any problems there. It's one of our fave sites."

Washing facilities: Two showers, two wash cubicles, plenty of toilets. The facilities were kept clean and bug-free. There were also good dishwashing and laundry rooms, and how often do you get to peel your veg next to a racecourse’s stable block?
Suited to: Families/anyone interested in horseracing!
WiFi access: No
Green credentials: None specifically
Nearby attractions & views: Apart from being based on the grounds of Fakenham Racecourse, the site is very well placed for anyone wanting to explore Norfolk. It’s around 10 miles from the coastal town of Wells-Next-the-Sea, half way between Kings Lynn and Norwich and is within reach of the Norfolk Broads. The town of Fakenham has a number of pubs and restaurants, a bowling alley and cinema and there is a fresh produce market every Thursday.
Online booking available: Yes
Cost per pitch: For camping, from £3.50 - £6 per person per night. Please check with site manager for exact charges.
General feedback: The site was well maintained with generously spaced pitches. Staff in the reception were friendly and helpful and the on site bar was well stocked and very good value. I’d be happy to recommend this site to anyone looking for a base in Norfolk.

Campsite: PineWoods - Norfolk
8/26/2009 8:56:12 PM
Campsite: PineWoods
Overall Rating: 4/10
Location: Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk
Contact details: 01328 710439 / www.pinewoods.co.uk
Washing facilities: Yes in the main caravan park, but not in the camping area we were allocated to. In the main park the facilities were in need of some updating and the showers had mould/damp on the walls. In the field we were pitched in there were half a dozen portaloos and a couple of drinking water points though.
Suited to: Campers who are happy to 'rough it' a bit, in return for great location.
WiFi access: No
Pinewoods campsiteNearby attractions & views: You could throw a stone from this campsite and hit the beach (or a seagull!). It's a pleasant 1-mile walk into Wells town centre (or there's a lovely miniture steam train for those less inclined to walk); a 10 minute walk to the beautiful Pine Woods, around 4 miles from Holkham Hall and the site is also perfectly situated for visiting the North Norfolk coast. (More images here)
Cost per pitch: This was the reason the site only scored 4/10. Despite having been quoted £17-£21 on email I was charged £27 per night to pitch on the overflow site. We were unable to book a tent pitch in advance - even though we were with a party of caravans who HAD booked. Having checked the online brochure, I note it does say £27 per night for overflow, but in all honesty I would never pay that again for this site and in future will either camp elsewhere (there is no shortage of campsites in Norfolk) or stay with family near by. The charge is just far to high for the poorly-serviced piece of land allocated as an 'overflow'.
General feedback: The site wasn't actually too bad, I'd happily have paid £10-£15 per night for my small pitch without any expectation of properly plummed toilets/showers/sinks. However, I do think that the £27 a night is just too much to ask when there are so many other excellent campsites around and being unable to book a spot in the lower-priced field will certainly put me off going again and sadly prevents me from reccommending this site to anyone I like!
