Cooking up a treat at the campsite
 Cooking can either be a pleasure or a real pain on a camping trip. If you’re well prepared and plan ahead a little you can eat like kings. If not, you’ll find missing tin openers and rotting meat will put you right off your dinner.
We’re taking the advice of GuyRopeGourmet and have decided to make our camping meals as good, if not better, than those we eat at home. Remember though, campsite cooking doesn’t have to be complicated. Cook what you fancy – food always seems to taste better when you cook it outdoors anyway.
You could get really adventurous, visiting a local fresh food market or maybe even catching your own fish – or perhaps you prefer the simpler option of a barbeque or maybe just a tin of beans with bread and butter. What ever your preference, these simple tips should help make sure you are always able to eat well on your camping trip:
- Always pack an extra lighter or box of matches.
- Don’t forget the tin opener, bottle opener and cork screw!
- Plan your meals before you set off – this will make sure you take the needed ingredients and equipment to prepare and cook your dinner.
 Keep a set of plastic dishes, cutlery, pans, washcloths, towels, and soap, just for your camping trips. Store them in a plastic container that can be pulled out and ready to go for each trip.- Invest in a quality camp stove. Most UK campsites won’t allow you to use a campfire, so you’ll need a way to boil the kettle in the morning!
- Carry instant or dried soups to serve with meals on cold or rainy days.
- If you’re camping at a festival you might want to consider taking paper cups and plates as these can be easily recycled and eliminate a lot of washing up.
- If you’re using an instant barbeque, remember it must be raised off the ground to prevent burning or scorching the grass underneath.
- If you don’t have a good cool bag it’s best not to try to store fresh meat. Many campsites will be able to sell you fresh sausages or bacon and if not a trip to the local shops may seem like an effort, but will be preferable to food poisoning!
- Take a carton of UHT milk for your hot drinks. It will keep without needing to be refrigerated before you open it.
- Remember to take bin bags – whatever food you use will come in packaging, which you’ll need to dispose of.
- Take a carefully packed sharp knife. Even if you’re just putting sausages on the BBQ, it can be used for slicing bread and separating the bangers.
- Never use your camping stove/BBQ inside your tent. It is just too easy to have an accident and injure your self or damage your tent. If it’s wet, set yourself up with a golf umbrella and prepare something quick, such as soup, accompanied by sandwiches (which can be prepared in the nice, dry tent!)
