Reading & Leeds, Glastonbury, T in the Park, Bestival, V, Isle of Wright... the list of music festivals is seemingly endless, thanks in part to the fact that since the late nineties the festival scene has exploded. No longer the domain of crazy stoned hippies (although, no doubt, there are still some of those around) Festivals now cater for everyone, with some festivals incorporating family areas.
Packing your camping gear and getting you tickets may seem like a breeze when compared to knowing what to wear to a festival, which is almost certainly always a point of contention...
The main issue is usually ensuring that you are prepared for all weather conditions. Wellies and a waterproof coat are generally classed as essentials (die hard festival fans will also know that you have to have a festival hat!). Of course you will always get the Kate Moss clones, wearing tiny shorts, Hunter wellies and waistcoats and a few boho chicks in floaty dresses fashionable teamed with wellies!
However, if you want to stand out from the crowd and if you wish to enhance your festival experience, then why not pack yourself a fancy dress costume. Anyone who has ever been to a festival knows that there are always loads of people milling around, dressed in the most fantastic gear and seemingly having a much better time than anyone else! Also, being dressed up in fancy dress means that people are more likely to think you approachable, so more people will stop and talk to you!
Having a fancy dress theme that is easy to wear and will help you stand out from the crowd, really will make your festival experience more enjoyable.
So, how do you decide on a fancy dress costume?
And, when do you wear it?
Well, generally anything goes at festivals, so each and every day can be a fancy dress festival day. You may even find that some festivals have organisers and judges who look out for the best competitors for covetted title of best festival costume, so the more elaborate the better (such as the T in the Park Tea Ladies on fancy dress Friday). Fancy dress costume is also practically an essential for some festivals, it is often said for example that at Glastonbury the only day it is acceptable to be dressed normally is on the Monday on your way home!
If you are looking for festival fancy dress costume inspiration, then how about these for a few ideas...common themes include;
Drag dress (including wigs) for men,
Stripy tights and tutu`s for the girlie`s
Devils or angels
...and everything else in between!
If there are a group of you going together, for added impact you could all try wearing the same outfits or theme, such as school girls, superheroes, or television characters. For example, Television or movie casts such as the Power Rangers or the cast from Watchmen, or be musically inspired by dressing up as the spice girls or GirlsAloud (being obvious and easily recognised is sometimes an advantage).
Buy your fancy dress costumes from an online store if you are not the creative type, or if you would prefer your outfit to look professional and want to have piece of mind that the stitching will hold whilst you boogie all day and night. Or come up with your own ideas and make your own costume. Remember you can be as simple or elaborate as you choose. Anything from a wacky wig, to a crazy hat, a wedding dress, prom dress, all over body paint, skin tight Lycra...
