Take an 'amazing' walk in York
Every May just outside York a 30 acre field is laid out with maize plants. In June the field is cut with a series of pathways to create a completely different design year-on-year. By July the maize is taller than most people.
Created from over 1.5 million maze plants and covering an area larger than fifteen Wembley football pitches, York Maze claims to be the biggest maze in the world for it's July - September life-span, (Because Maize is an annual crop it grows from seed and matures and dies within one season). It's dotted with clues and hidden surprises like picnic areas and viewing towers.
Be sure to check the online events calendar - the Maze owners team up with British Naturism on occasion (great if that's your thing, but could cause fits of giggles from your kids if you're not expecting it!). They also do a torch-lit event, which we can highly recommend.
The maze is wheelchair and pushchair friendly, although it could be hard going if it's been raining. You should allow about 1.5 hours to navigate your way around the maze (there are a few special exits for anyone who gets lost). You could easily spend another two hours on the other attractions at the site, including a 'bouncy pillow'', a crazy maze golf course, a maze of illusions, an inflatable maze, a 'meet the animals' area and ice-cream and BBQ stalls.
Whilst this isn't a 'walk' in the traditional hiking sense, it's a great day out with plenty of exercise and you're still close enough to York to spend some time enjoying the City.
